Safe Sitter Class

"Family-Centered Maternity Care "

SAFE SITTER is a one day course that teaches 11-13 year old boys and girls about being safe babysitters. We stress that being a babysitter is not for everyone. The class stresses when you are babysitting, you are that child's body guard. It is the sitter's responsibility to carefully watch the children so accidents are less likely to happen. We tell the children when they babysit they are accepting the responsibility for a child's life. The class' philosophy is that teens should not babysit for babies less than 6 months of age if they have not had 2 years of sitting experience. The sitters goal when babysitting is to keep the children and themselves safe and to have fun!

Class topics include: how to get safe babysitting jobs, meeting the employer, discussing payment, phone manners, discipline, respect, what is an emergency and what is not, and when to call 911 and when to call the parents.

First Aid is taught in the class. The Heimlich Maneuver for both infants and children is taught. Full CPR is not taught as part of this class. If the sitter would like a CPR class we refer them to the hospital CPR class.

There is an open book test at the end of the day and role playing as a review for the kids to pass. Each student receives a Safe Sitter back-pack which includes their manual, flashlight, Band-Aid dispenser, and an emergency phone number pad. The sitter is instructed to always take their Safe Sitter back-pack with them to babysit.
