What is the difference between a
registered dietitian and a nutritionist?

Registered dietitian is a legally protected title used by dietetic practioners who are authorized to use the credentials by the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the American Dietetic Association. Individuals with the registered dietitian (R.D.) credentials have completed specific academic and practice requirements, successfully completed a national registration exam and maintain current requirements for ongoing certification.  Many states have laws and licensing boards to regulate the practice of dietetics.  In the state of Ohio, a qualified dietitian must also be licensed to practice as denoted by the licensed dietitian (L.D.) credentials.  Some dietitians call themselves nutritionist, however the definition and requirements for the term "nutritionist" vary and is not a legally designated or protected title.
