The Fayette County Memorial Hospital Foundation was recently awarded $58,894.00 from the Columbus Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure for the Fayette County Memorial Hospital (FCMH) Partners in Pink Mammography Program. The Program was one of 34 breast health programs to receive more than $1.9 million in funding from Komen Columbus. The main goals of the FCMH Partners in Pink Mammography Program are implementation of a public awareness and educational campaign and to provide mammograms to uninsured and underinsured residents in Fayette County ages 35 and older. The age may vary if a patient is currently symptomatic or has a family history of breast cancer. Men may receive diagnostic mammograms.

“We are happy to award these grants to programs and organizations in our 30–county service area that directly impact thousands of women who are underserved and uninsured. Our grantees use the money awarded for many programs including screening, education, treatment, survivor support and outreach programs,” said Katie Carter, Executive Director of Komen Columbus. “Together, we are driven by Komen’s mission to save lives and end breast cancer forever and every dollar raised takes us one step closer to achieving that goal.”

Fayette County has the second highest breast cancer mortality rate in the state of Ohio, according to the American Cancer Society, Ohio Cancer Facts & Figures 2010 report. Wanting to make an impact on the lives and health of residents in Fayette County, team members from the hospital and Foundation created a task force and began working on ideas and funding sources for a mammography program. “We are so thrilled to receive the Komen grant this year. This money will greatly improve the number of women we will be able to serve”, states Debbie Boggs, RN, Foundation Executive Director.

For more information on eligibility guidelines and program services, please call FCMH Central Scheduling at 740-333-2742. If you wish to make a donation to further the FCMH Partners in Pink Mammography Program, please call the Foundation Office at 740-333-2833.

Lyndon Christman, CEO of Fayette County Memorial Hospital recently announced the hospital’s receipt of the SCIP-6 Commitment to Quality Award. The honor was presented by Rita Bowling, MSN, MBA, CPHQ, Project Director, and Ronald Savrin, MD, MBA, FACS, Medical Director of Ohio KePRO, on behalf of the Medicare Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs) leading SCIP-6, an interstate collaborative consisting of hospitals and QIOs from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) is a national quality partnership of organizations focused on improving surgical care by significantly reducing complications in the more than 40 million operations performed in the U.S. each year. These complications include infections, blood clots, heart problems, and other adverse events that take a toll on patients and also on the overall cost of healthcare across the country. A significant percentage of these complications are preventable.

The focus of SCIP-6 is to support the national SCIP initiative by accelerating improvements in surgical care through a forum of learning, sharing information, and promoting best practices and system improvements on a local and regional level. Fayette County Memorial Hospital has been recognized because of the hospital’s strong commitment to the project and to the SCIP-6 collaborative, including time, resources, and other efforts that have improved the quality of care and quality of life for its patients. The hospital’s contributions have also added to the knowledge base of the collaborative, making it possible for other hospitals to assimilate its success in other parts of the nation.

“We are pleased to honor Fayette County Memorial Hospital with the SCIP-6 Commitment to Quality Award,” noted Rita Bowling. “With hospitals like theirs and with healthcare providers from different states in close communication, we can develop processes to reduce the rate of surgical complications-not only in Ohio and the other 5 states in the SCIP-6 collaborative, but throughout the nation.”

“We are very excited to receive this award from our QIO. It provides validation of our continued support and work towards improving the quality of care and patient safety. Working collaboratively with hospitals in surrounding states is a great way to share ideas and information,” said Lyndon Christman.

Albert G. Gay, MD, Hospitalist at Fayette County Memorial Hospital was recently selected as an “Invited Content Expert for the 2011 American Board of Family Medicine Standard Setting Study” by The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). Every three years, the ABFM invites selected physicians to participate in a process that provides the Examination Committee with information regarding what is an appropriate passing standard for their Board Certification Examination. The study assists ABFM in establishing high standards for patient care delivered by board certified family physicians. Based primarily on Dr. Gay’s performance on his recent examination, he was given this special recognition.

Family Physicians seeking Board Certification and Recertification with the ABFM take an examination, which is a test of medical knowledge and problem-solving ability relevant to Family Medicine. Questions include, but are not limited to, diagnosis, management, and prevention of illness. Candidates must satisfactorily meet all the requirements of application to be certified or recertified, including appropriate training, medical licensure, and continuing medical education, before being approved to take the examination.

Fayette County Memorial Hospital would like to thank Dr. Gay for his dedication to his patients and the hospital, and congratulate him on helping to set the standard in family medicine.
